The
Fleet Inn, Restaurant and Riverside Accomodation, is situated in the
village of
Twyning near Tewkesbury in Gloucestershire. We offer a range of
traditional pub and restaurant food, drink and riverside accommodation.
Situated
on the banks of the River Avon on the Gloucestershire and Worcestershire
border. It's only a mile from junction 1 of the M50 and just over 2
miles from junction 8 of the M5 providing easy access from and to the
motorway network. It is an ideal and convenient place for an overnight
stay or for a longer relaxing break (Rooms
from £44.95) The easy access to the motorway network makes
us an ideal base for those wishing to visit the places of interest in
Worcestershire and Gloucestershire. Cheltenham is only 15 miles away
and each year in March, is host to the Cheltenham Festival, which includes
the Gold Cup. Also, just 35 miles away, is the land of Shakespeare,
Stratford-upon-Avon.
The riverside Accommodation
is available in the historic boathouse, adjacent to the Inn. This comprises
3 en suite bedrooms that are pleasantly furnished. All the rooms have
views that overlook the river and the surrounding countryside.
The interior of the Inn is traditional, featuring a 15th century inglenook
fireplace that is lit daily during the winter period. The main body
of the Inn overlooks both the river and the extensive terraced patios
and lawn. Special consideration has been given to making the pub both
'wheel chair friendly' and 'child friendly'.
Our
customers can choose to eat either inside or outside and may select
from a wide menu (A separate
children's menu is available). The
famous Fleet Carvery is served on Sundays between 12.00 noon and
4pm.
The
pub has a well stocked bar that includes keg bitters and lagers, 3 draught
ciders and a selection of 3 real ales. Children find our 'Pets Corner'
to be a big hit.

Traditional
Sunday Carvery at its best
The
Fleet Inn, in the village of Twyning, is, we're sure, no stranger to
the residents of our area. Beautifully situated on the banks of the
River Avon, it occupies a wonderful position with external terraces
and lawns running right down to the water ideal for wiling away a summer's
day or evening.
On
colder days in winter, the pub comes up trumps too. With a traditional
old world interior, a warmly lit 15th century inglenook fireplace and
candles on all the tables, the choosy ambiance provides a perfect antidote
to the weather outside.
New
proprietors, John and Jackie Bishop, who took over the ownership of
this well known and well loved establishment just twelve months ago,
bring with them a lifetime of experience in the hospitality field. Together
with their Head Chef Richard Rowe, 2nd Chef James Stead and Manageress
Sylvia Mott, John and Jackie have created a team with the aim that guests
enjoy their drink and food and leave wanting to come back for more.
Special considerations, have also been given to make the pub wheelchair
and child friendly.
We
were invited to review their Sunday Carvery, a famous event at the Fleet
since its inception in October last year. We arrived on a sunny, but
cold and blustery, Sunday afternoon in February, with our young kids
in tow, and were immediately struck by the warm, welcoming and bustling
atmosphere of this popular country pub.
The
Fleet has two restaurants, the Captain's Table (seating 60) and the
Quarter Deck (seating 25), two bar areas, Fisherman and Avon Boaters,
and an extensive patio area (when weather permits!). Our table, one
of the very few not yet occupied, was on the Quarter Deck by the window
overlooking the river a perfect spot to keep an eye on our kids whilst
they played outside in between the courses!
Our
first insight into the food to come came from tasting the delicious,
and aptly named, Bishops Choice sausages which, together with tempting
cubes of cheese, are on offer at the bar.
After
ordering our drinks from the bar, (the pub has a well stocked bar, including
keg bitters and lagers, two draught ciders and a selection of five real
ales), our waitress Nikki came over to our table to explain the carvery
procedure. Starters and desserts (from around £4.75) and coffee
can all be ordered and served at the table. The carvery is served from
"the little kitchen", an area adjacent to the Fisherman's
bar, where the chef heads up the carving proceedings. Anyone needing
a lesson in carving should certainly come here and see a "master"
at work!
All
the meat is bought locally (from David Dudley butcher's in Tewkesbury)
and freshly prepared. For £9.95 (£5.95 for children) diners
can enjoy up to three, very generous, portions of meat from a choice
of five (in our case: beef, lamb, pork, turkey and gammon).
We
then helped ourselves to the wonderful array of seasonal vegetables
on the adjacent table: carrots, cauliflower, sprouts, parsnips and roast
potatoes, together with home baked Yorkshire puddings, gravy and pork
crackling.
After
making our choice from the accompanying sauces laid out on a third table
we were ready to take our, very full, plates to the table and enjoy
our lunch.
Our
meal was delicious, succulent slices of meat, tenderly cooked vegetables,
crisply roasted potatoes and fabulously large Yorkshire puddings.
For
dessert we chose Apple Crumble, served with either custard, cream or
ice cream, a fruit flan called Chantilly, while the kids chose the Clown
Face ice cream, served with a wafer biscuit and a few slices of fresh
strawberries and orange. Again, judging by the empty plates at the end
of our meal, the puddings went down a treat.
We
had a truly lovely afternoon. John and Jackie and their team were very
welcoming, the food was lovely, the service very efficient and the children
were well catered for. Perhaps our son summed it up by saying: "It's
a cool place for kids too mummy, and I loved the meat, pudding and fires
and playing outside"!
